Description
The Theory of Operations studies arithmetic operations as structured families connected by iteration, symmetrisation and changes of coordinate.
M45, The Turned Operation, collects and corrects the nine papers R00-R08 as one applied programme investigating what happens when an operation is treated not as a fixed law, but as a member of a controlled family whose role, reading depths, moving operand and reporting frame can change.
The central control is Progress, a complex multiplier placed on one operand after both operands have been mapped into operational charts. At p=1, the operation builds: addition gives a sum, multiplication gives a product and exponentiation gives a power. At p=-1, the same operational cell undoes or measures: addition becomes subtraction, multiplication becomes division and exponentiation becomes root extraction. On the unit circle,
p = exp(2*pi*i*kappa),
Progress moves continuously between these roles. At p=i, the additive cell produces the ordinary complex form
a+i*b.
The volume asks whether problems that appear nonstationary, asymmetric or fragmented under fixed operations become more natural when the operational controls themselves are allowed to move. This is the knob-native principle. Merely redescribing a problem with new terminology is not sufficient. Moving controls must produce a concrete invariant, reduction, closure law, algorithm, stability condition, harmonic-selection rule or falsifiable test.
The programme is applied to modulation, directional sensitivity, inverse dynamics, chemical reaction networks, instrumentation, constitutive-law inference, transported hypercomplex structures and Lambert’s W function.
Two operational architectures
The volume works across two distinct constructions.
The Symmetric Core is an infinite ladder of commutative, associative operations obtained by transporting ordinary addition through successively iterated-logarithmic charts, beginning with addition, multiplication and associative power Apow.
The HyperCore is an elevator through symmetric hyperoperations, built from channels, pair protocols, storage means and symmetrisation. Its half-integer stages are machines rather than formulas. They possess transients, convergence behaviour, spectra and invariants.
The distinction is essential. Rooms are not ranks. A Halbzeug formula between rooms is not a Hyperzeug protocol between HyperCore rungs. A transported algebra is not automatically a deformed or newly discovered algebra.
The operational rotor
If Progress turns at a constant angular rate, every operational cell has the same native motion in its chart:
U(t) = Z*exp(i*omega*t).
The displayed waveform may be additive, multiplicative, exponential or more strongly nonlinear. After applying the appropriate chart and removing the stationary contribution, however, the displacement is one harmonic oscillator.
The diversity of displayed waveforms therefore comes from the chart wrapper, while the native movement remains a uniform circle. This gives an exact action invariant and separates the underlying motion from its room-dependent presentation.
Sampling the Progress circle at roots of unity produces finite Progress crates. Their closures and inclusions follow the divisibility lattice of cyclic groups. Averaging over an order-n crate removes every Fourier mode whose index is not divisible by n.
This is the classical orthogonality of cyclic characters and the basis of phase cycling. The operational interpretation is that the sampled phase may belong not only to a signal after a law has acted, but to the role of the law itself. Cyclic error cancellation, harmonic selection, synchronous detection and phase-coherent averaging are therefore the most immediate practical readings of the construction. No superiority over established phase-cycling methods is claimed.
At the multiplicative room, the rotor joins multiplication and division through a pure-phase member. Logarithmic gain and phase become two coordinates of a circle with radius |ln(b)|. Progress redistributes a fixed native budget between amplification and phase rotation.
Progress also commutes with exact chart transport between regular rooms. Consequently, transported room structures have zero room-Progress curvature. The unresolved global difficulty lies instead at branch cuts, folds and multivalued domains.
Depth charge and the limit of static asymmetry
The depth lattice allows the two operands to be read at different chart depths. Their signed difference is the depth charge. A nonzero depth charge makes the installed binary law exchange-asymmetric and gives its two channels unequal differential sensitivities.
The ratio of those sensitivities is independent of the outer wrapper. It therefore survives a change in how the result is displayed. One unit of depth charge generates an iterated-logarithmic hierarchy of sensitivity ratios.
The asymmetry nevertheless has an exact potential. Its exchange defect has the form
Q(a)-Q(b).
Every closed cycle of such differences sums to zero. A fixed depth-charged cell can therefore bias or rectify, but cannot by itself produce cycle affinity or sustained pumping.
Likewise, if the depth assignment is reflected together with the ports, the resulting two-port is reciprocal at equal bias. Genuine nonreciprocity requires additional structure that cannot be removed by port reversal, such as:
- a pinned odd bias;
- unequal hardware assignments;
- delay;
- branch dependence;
- structural nonlinearity;
- a travelling Progress phase.
A travelling Progress phase produces a proved kinematic directional split. Turning that split into a stable, causal isolating device remains an open engineering programme.
Reversed protocols and resonance storage
The volume next turns from binary room cells to reversed HyperCore protocols.
A progressing half-rank protocol is usually a contraction. Its limiting diagonal point depends on the input and therefore stores the input through its limiting mean. Reversing the parents and normalisers changes the storage mechanism. The common endpoint may become universal and forget the input, while information survives in the amplitudes, phases or branches of the modes leaving a repelling fixed point.
At the first half-rank seam, the reversed protocol has one positive fixed point with two expanding multipliers:
q_+ = sqrt(2),
q_- = -sqrt(2).
A local linearising chart resolves departure from the fixed point into two amplitudes C_+ and C_-. Their squared ratio,
R = (C_+/C_-)^2,
is invariant under both forward and backward protocol steps. It rejects a common calibration factor and is canonical under the stated meromorphic and covariance assumptions.
The invariant labels leaves rather than complete orbits. Evaluated on the regressors of addition and multiplication, the invariant defines the rank-3/2 mirror operation. The volume develops this as an inverse instrument with parity demodulation, calibration cancellation, first-order error propagation and internal consistency checks.
At rank 5/2, the reversed machine changes type. Its fixed point lies on a nonprincipal sheet and has one expanding and one contracting direction. The resulting saddle may support a conditional real-power leaf invariant, but not the same rational invariant as the first seam.
At rank 7/2, the mirror is not yet defined. The rank-four parent lacks the sign slot needed for a canonical construction. The proposed decline in expanding directions,
2 -> 1 -> 0,
is therefore established only for the first two stages.
Reaction networks
The reaction-network chapter interprets familiar quantities through room regressors:
- subtraction is an energy-gap meter;
- division is a rate-ratio meter;
- logarithms are affinities;
- the regressing Caterpillar form
a*exp(-b)hosts an exponential barrier law.
Every reversible rate pair separates into a symmetric activity and an oriented affinity. If the affinity is generated by one potential, detailed balance follows and every cycle sum vanishes. The potential sector and the circulating cycle sector are therefore distinct.
For a homogeneous reaction ring, cyclic characters diagonalise the generator. The even combination of forward and backward rates controls relaxation, while the odd combination controls circulation. A network twist acts as a counting field for winding.
Equilibrium catalysis modifies activity without creating affinity. Driven catalysis can change the cycle sector. Connections to molecular motors and to a common electronic and kinetic flux remain proposed applications rather than established results.
Operational instruments
The instrumentation programme distinguishes four levels:
- a state instrument reads a point;
- a law instrument reads a map;
- a Core instrument compares operations across rooms or ranks;
- a seam instrument measures where two laws or protocols meet.
An invertible report is only a change of coordinates and loses no information. A closed autonomous law for a noninvertible report exists exactly when the underlying dynamics preserves the fibres of the observation.
In formula form, a report H closes the dynamics of F through a map G exactly when
H o F = G o H.
The difference between the actual reported evolution and the best closed report evolution is the observation defect.
An operational instrument therefore requires more than one scalar formula. It needs a chart, transported calculus, measure, period or loop data, a branch-and-fold atlas, and off-fit certificates confirming that the functional equations and reconstructions continue to hold away from calibrated points.
The volume also separates three structures often conflated in earlier work:
- monodromy from continuation around a branch or fold;
- discrete curvature from a second difference or change of rate;
- simple failure of a proposed closure.
An isolated nonzero defect is not automatically holonomy. Global logarithmic inversion requires a branch address, and folds impose genuine limits on what an instrument can distinguish.
Constitutive laws and bidepth inference
The constitutive-law chapter replaces the attempt to assign one scalar rank to data with a bidepth address. Its affine family includes linear, power, exponential and iterated-exponential laws within one compositional groupoid.
Numerical studies show how an omitted shift can masquerade as a new exponent or operational level. Two mechanisms can also share the same ensemble scaling while differing in:
- increment correlations;
- ageing;
- ergodicity;
- transient behaviour;
- response to perturbation;
- state closure.
Integer-floor data cannot uniquely select a continuation between rooms.
The proposed inference discipline therefore admits an operational address only after shift, symmetry, closure, mechanism and out-of-sample prediction have been tested. The native law of a system is the simplest certified address that closes the observed dynamics and predicts beyond the data used for selection.
Rheology, anomalous diffusion and symmetry-reduced spectroscopy are presented as candidate laboratories for this programme, not as demonstrations of a universal classification.
Native complexification and the transport firewall
The longest chapter studies the perpendicular setting p=i throughout the operational geography.
Every invertible chart transports the complex numbers, their quarter-turn and the quaternions to an isomorphic native copy. This yields exact native complexification, transported Cayley-Dickson structures and a vertical groupoid connecting rooms.
In the log-sum-exp basement, the perpendicular construction separates into an aggregate magnitude and a dominance phase. The phase is complementary under operand exchange, is maximally sensitive at a tie and becomes a logistic share in another coordinate.
The central firewall is:
transport is not deformation.
Pulling an algebra back through an invertible chart preserves every identity. Transported complex and quaternion algebras are therefore new representations of known structures, not new algebraic species. Their transported clone defects vanish identically.
A genuinely new algebra would require an intrinsic product not jointly conjugate to a classical one. The original intrinsic-cloning programme does not yet define such a product. Several associated conjectures requiring an additive chart for a nonassociative Halbzeug operation are consequently rejected.
No new hypercomplex algebra, cryptographic advantage or practical superiority over Log-Euclidean, Lie-group or established hypercomplex baselines is claimed.
Lambert structure
The closing chapter organises the roles of Lambert’s W.
It establishes the branchwise rank lift of Lamberting, identifies fixed points and rank-invariant multipliers, and relates Lambert inversion to the rank-5/2 machinery and the Caterpillar Hermit unit.
The proposed Lambert rotor is corrected. The family
L_p(x) = p*W(p*x)
is not a composition action of the unit circle. Its supposed identity member is not the identity map, and the required composition law fails on every open family of sheets.
The correct object is the orbit of Lambert’s function under a circle action on maps by two-sided rescaling. Although this rotor is not a group action on values, its branch structure carries genuine monodromy.
Continuation once around the relevant Hermit unit moves Lambert’s W upward by one branch. The corresponding modifier loop moves its fixed point through the Lambertian covering. The former Heun interpretation is withdrawn. The surviving structure is Lambertian and branch-theoretic.
Standing contribution
The volume preserves several exact results:
- the universal operational rotor;
- cyclic crate filtering;
- the exchange potential and its no-pumping consequence;
- wrapper-independent sensitivity ratios;
- the first-seam resonance extractor;
- the activity-affinity split of reversible rates;
- the report-closure criterion;
- native transported complex structures;
- the transport-versus-deformation firewall;
- the branchwise Lambert rank lift.
Several earlier claims are corrected or rejected:
- static depth charge does not produce sustained pumping;
- invertible reporting is not information loss;
- a scaling exponent is not an operational rank;
- algebraic transport is not deformation;
- a large inverse census does not itself prove hardness;
- the Lambert rotor is not a composition action;
- the rank-
7/2mirror has not been constructed.
The principal open front is explicit. Global Progress actions on branch-complete domains remain unclassified. The intrinsic clone product must be defined before any defect can be studied. A physical mechanism converting travelling Progress into stable nonreciprocity remains to be built. The rank-7/2 mirror remains open. Most importantly, the volume demonstrates no practical advantage over strong classical baselines.
M45 (R00-08) establishes the Turned Operation as a disciplined applied programme rather than a new universal mechanism. Its central proposal is that some systems may be represented more naturally as paths through operational controls. That proposal earns mathematical or scientific content only when the moving controls produce a certified invariant, reduction, closure law, algorithm, stability condition or falsifiable test.
