Functional Consciousness: Pillar 40: The Persistence Imperative

Description
Abstract
The Ontology of Consciousness reconstructs the conditions under which anything, including mind, can exist. It begins not with consciousness or with a singularity, but with the minimal requirement that physically different states be possible at all. Distinguishability is treated as a necessary condition rather than a substance, field, or hidden constituent; energy, entropy, measurement, and information become meaningful only after sufficient structure has emerged for those concepts to be defined.
From this starting point, the book proposes a finite, causally connected primordial object, the Garden or Cosmological Pangaea, whose interior Weyl curvature can vanish. Zero Weyl supplies the low-entropy beginning Penrose’s Weyl Curvature Hypothesis demands without placing the universe at a mathematical point where the equations fail. A geometry-enforced First Cut then actualizes distinction, fragmenting the Garden into 3+1 Lorentzian spacetime and launching irreversible Weyl growth. The thermodynamic arrow, matter–antimatter asymmetry, and large-scale scars in the CMB are read as consequences of that single process. General relativity plus entropy accounting (the GR-Razor) is used to recover or reinterpret standard cosmological successes while naming the residual mountains: the fragmentation spectrum, the multiplicity gap in geometric baryogenesis, lithium, and the precise origin of the distinction condition itself.
The same thermodynamic discipline is then followed upward. Habitability is a rented disequilibrium. Life, nervous systems, and later artificial systems occupy narrow bands in which gradients are exploited without erasing the structures that exploit them. Perception appears as compressive filtering; the self as a model that includes the organism whose survival the model serves; prediction and externalized tools as further levers. Throughout, carbon and silicon pay rent to the same landlord.
Later chapters descend beneath the effective medium picture, recover a thinner relational architecture of constraint, accessibility, and transformation, then climb back through coarse-graining, effective fields, emergent geometry, and hydrodynamics. Persistence, boundaries, records, and self-models are shown to arise as successive compressions. At the end, the book refuses to dissolve the hard problem: functional organization, information processing, and self-modeling can be described from the outside, yet the fact that something is happening from here remains. Experience is placed inside the universe rather than above it, and the ontology is required to make room for that fact without pretending it has been derived.
The work is offered as a testable reconstruction rather than a finished theory of everything. Mountains are named, near-passes are not coronated, and the claim is limited to an order of climb: from the condition of distinguishability, through a finite zero-Weyl beginning and thermodynamic cost, to the peculiar systems that eventually ask what the condition is.
