CONTEXT-AWARE SENTIMENT ANALYSIS AND SOCIAL MEDIA TREND FORECASTING: A FOCUSED SURVEY OF METHODS, BENCHMARKS, AND OPEN CHALLENGES

Description

Social media platforms provide a rapidly changing stream of opinions, reactions, and topic signals. Sentiment analysis estimates the polarity expressed in text, while trend forecasting estimates how topic attention or sentiment evolves over time. These tasks are related but are not interchangeable: a sentiment classifier labels individual messages, whereas forecasting requires temporally ordered observations and a clearly defined target. This focused survey reviews representative approaches to social-media sentiment analysis and outlines how their outputs can be connected to trend monitoring without overstating predictive capability. It discusses lexicon-based methods, conventional machine learning, neural sequence models, transformer-based language models, benchmark design, and temporal forecasting. SemEval-2017 Task 4 illustrates topic-based Twitter sentiment evaluation and includes English and Arabic subtasks, TweetEval provides a unified benchmark across seven Twitter-specific classification tasks. These resources support reproducible classification comparisons, but neither benchmark alone establishes that a system can forecast future real-world trends. The paper therefore proposes a research workflow that separates message-level classification from time-series aggregation, uses chronological evaluation for forecasting, reports macro-F1 and class-wise errors for sentiment, and reports MAE or RMSE for numeric forecasts. It also identifies practical challenges including sarcasm, code-switching, domain shift, platform changes, sampling bias, privacy, and data leakage. No new experiments are claimed in this survey, quantitative results are included only when attributed to published sources. The paper concludes with a reproducible evaluation agenda for researchers developing context-aware and multilingual social-media analytics.
