Super-Resolution Maps of Icy Moons: Cassini VIMS Mosaics of Enceladus

  • 1. ROR icon Institut de physique du globe de Paris

Description

Global maps of Enceladus built from 1566 Cassini VIMS infrared cubes (2005–2016), navigated, photometrically corrected and combined into super-resolution mosaics with the Super-Resolution for Icy Moons pipeline (Ntinos & Rodriguez, 2026, 10.5281/zenodo.21037588). The method is described in Ntinos et al. (2026), Planetary Research, 10.53480/arz2-gn59.

Products (equirectangular, 1440 × 720 pixels, 0.25°/pixel, planetocentric latitude, longitude −180° to +180° positive east, north up):

  • enc_vims_sr_1_80401 – monochromatic I/F map at 1.80401 µm.
  • enc_vims_sr_rgb – three-band infrared colour composite: band 1 (red) = I/F(3.09689 µm) / I/F(1.65567 µm), band 2 (green) = I/F at 2.00167 µm, band 3 (blue) = I/F at 1.80401 µm. Values are physical, not stretched.

Format. The dataset is a NASA PDS4 bundle (Information Model 1.25.0.0; LID urn:fr:ipgp:vims_sr_mosaics) packaged as a single zip. Data files are headerless big-endian 32-bit floats described by XML labels that carry the full map projection, processing history and the list of input cubes. The bundle contains the data products (data_enceladus/), PNG quick-looks (browse_enceladus/) and documentation (document/). The labels validate with the PDS4 Validate Tool and open directly in GDAL/QGIS and in pds4_tools; a readme.txt at the root gives numpy and GDAL examples. The bundle follows the PDS4 standard but is not archived with NASA PDS or any IPDA archive; this DOI is its persistent identifier.

Processing. Pixel navigation with a pinhole camera model and the Enceladus DSK shape model; VIMS wavelength-shift correction; saturation screening; global photometric correction with the Kaasalainen–Shkuratov model and Akimov disk function, normalised to incidence = emission = phase = 0°; weighted-average super-resolution fusion onto the 0.25° grid.

Input data and credit. VIMS cubes calibrated with the USGS ISIS3 pipeline of the Cassini VIMS Data Portal (OSUNA/LPG, Nantes Université, vims.univ-nantes.fr), distributed under CC-BY-4.0.
