Description
This MedEWSa slide deck explains that the same hazard does not cause the same impacts everywhere, contrasting Hurricanes Katrina and Dorian, and introduces risk as the combination of hazard, exposure and vulnerability. It defines exposure as the people, assets and services in harm's way and shows how this differs for floods, heatwaves, droughts and wildfires. Operational examples from Storm Daniel in 2023 show exposure information from the GloFAS and Copernicus Rapid Mapping both from CEMS. It explains vulnerability as a mix of how easily people or assets are harmed and how well they can cope and recover. Mediterranean examples associating the above concepts with past events include the 2022 Iberian heatwave, drought in southern Spain, the 2023 Thessaly floods and the 2023 Rhodes wildfires. It also covers using past similar events to anticipate impacts, the fact that risk changes over time with climate and development, and the need to tailor impact information to the user, the decision, the timescale and the area.
