Who pays for diamond books?
Description
Join us for a discussion of diamond open access, in which we will look at different perspectives on and solutions to covering the costs of this publishing model. What is it that costs money? What solutions are available for covering short-term and long-term costs for diamond open access journals, both those that flip to this model and those that are diamond from inception? How can scholarly books be funded in this model?
Sofie Wennström, Stockholm University and the Swedish node for diamond open access, presents the recently published report on the current status and future prospects of diamond open access in Sweden. The report is based on a 2025 survey of Swedish scholarly journals.
Karolina Andersdotter, the National Library of Sweden, presents the pilot project for diamond open access, a collaboration between the National Library and the Swedish research funders Formas and Forte., which aims to explore and map systemic obstacles in the transition to diamond open access in Sweden.
Caroline Edwards of Open Journals Collective and Caroline Ball of Open Book Collective will discuss the funding model behind these two diamond open access initiatives. Both are based on similar principles of collective funding and raise resources in support of diamond open access publishing of journals and books, respectively.
