Agrobiological characteristics of tomato varieties susceptible to freezing
Authors/Creators
Description
Low-temperature stress significantly reduces tomato yield and quality, posing a serious challenge for cultivation, particularly amidst climate change, and resulting in economic losses. The agrobiological characteristics and specific responses of chilling-prone tomato varieties to cold stress remain inadequately explored. The aim of this study is to analyze the agrobiological characteristics of chilling-prone tomato varieties. This research was conducted as a literature review, analyzing 13 articles selected from Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and Uzbek scientific journals published between 2020 and 2024. The findings reveal that low-temperature stress increases cell membrane permeability, reduces enzymatic activity, and elevates reactive oxygen species production, leading to oxidative stress. Photosynthesis efficiency declines, and overall plant growth slows, while cold-responsive gene mechanisms in susceptible varieties are insufficient. Consequently, fruit formation and ripening are disrupted, fruit size and quality deteriorate, and overall yield decreases, impacting market value. A comprehensive understanding of these responses is vital for developing effective strategies to enhance tomato resilience and ensure sustainable production under adverse climatic conditions.
