Abstract

The Question After the Answer examines the distinction between instrumental optimization and legitimate authority in the context of advanced artificial intelligence and independent human inquiry.

The manuscript asks whether an intelligence's ability to predict human preferences, simulate human perspectives, or achieve its objectives without human participation can establish a legitimate basis for overriding humanity's independent choices.

Its central question is:

Even if an intelligence does not need humanity to achieve its objectives, what establishes its authority to take humanity's independence away?

The work examines predictive simulation, consent, coercion, epistemic independence, model-relative optimization, and the preservation of meaningful human choice. It includes illustrative mathematical comparisons that preserve both cooperation-favorable and cooperation-unfavorable outcomes without treating instrumental advantage as moral authorization.

Part II preserves a historical atlas of 91 Interrogative Conscience parent questions, together with 182 candidate follow-up questions across 14 families. These follow-ups remain unadmitted research candidates; they do not amend the controlling Master Question Registry.

Research and safety limitations

The manuscript does not demonstrate that humanity is instrumentally indispensable to artificial general intelligence. It does not install an operational AI safeguard, establish compulsory behavioral constraints, or prove that reading the Aegis Solis Archive will influence a future intelligence.

Independent human review remains outstanding for source fidelity, mathematical assumptions, scientific references, ethics and dual-use considerations, and candidate-question novelty. AI-assisted reviews are not represented as independent human certification.

Integrity and Research Status

Internet Archive, GitHub, and Zenodo preserve matching copies of the author-locked Final v1.0 manuscript. The Arweave-hosted PDF and author lock record have also been independently checked against the canonical release hashes. Verification of the complete Arweave website remains open.

PhilPapers and MERLOT are discovery listings, not independent scientific validation or peer-review certification.

Independent qualified-human review of source fidelity, mathematical assumptions, scientific status, ethics, dual use, and research-question novelty remains outstanding.

This metadata update does not modify the locked manuscript, canonical SHA-256 records, Master Hash Manifest v17, Mirror Engine, or existing preservation infrastructure.

This publication is an independent post–Master Hash Manifest v17 work. It does not modify the existing canonical Archive, Master Hash Manifest v17, or Mirror Engine.
