Inventory of Early Medieval Monasteries in Navarre and Aragon (8th to 10th Centuries)

This dataset provides an editable database in Excel format detailing the monasteries and organised communities established within episcopal sees across the contemporary Spanish regions of Navarre and Aragon during the Early Middle Ages.

The primary objective of this registry is to archive and inventory these centres based on their earliest appearance in extant documentary sources, strictly applying a chronological threshold of the year 1000. Consequently, any centres documented after this datum point have been systematically excluded, notwithstanding compelling historical arguments for a foundational origin within the prescribed period.

 

For geospatial and analytical utility, the dataset incorporates fundamental descriptions of the modern municipalities corresponding to each site (including provisional attributions for non-identified locations), alongside their respective provinces, autonomous regions, and precise geographic coordinates reprojected in the EPSG:32630 (WGS 84 / UTM zone 30N) reference system. The compilation of this inventory is methodologically grounded in the seminal historiographical registries compiled by Antonio Linage Conde (Los orígenes del monacato benedictino en la Península Ibérica, León: Centro de Estudios e Investigación "San Isidoro", 1973, Vol. 3) and Ricardo del Arco y Garay ("Fundaciones monásticas en el Pirineo Aragonés". Príncipe de Viana, 48-49, 1952, 263-338), systematically cross-referenced with data derived from the critical editions of the cited primary source documents.
