Description
The essay asks why artificial intelligence companies call themselves laboratories. It follows the word from the alchemical laboratorium and Libavius's domus chymica, with the athanor, the alembic and the bain-marie, to Newton as the last of the magicians, the Renaissance studiolo and Wunderkammer, the Royal Society of Boyle and Hooke, Menlo Park, Bell Labs, Los Alamos and Xerox PARC. It describes the work of an AI lab in four kinds, pre-training, post-training, evaluation and interpretability, together with the human labour around it, and contrasts it with small and open labs. It concludes that in these labs the forge and the study have returned to the same room.

El ensayo se pregunta por qué las empresas de inteligencia artificial se llaman laboratorios. Sigue la palabra desde el laboratorium alquímico y la domus chymica de Libavius, con el athanor, el alambique y el baño María, hasta Newton como último de los magos, el studiolo y la Wunderkammer del Renacimiento, la Royal Society de Boyle y Hooke, Menlo Park, los Bell Labs, Los Álamos y Xerox PARC. Describe el trabajo de un laboratorio de IA en cuatro clases, pre-entrenamiento, post-entrenamiento, evaluación e interpretabilidad, junto con el trabajo humano que lo rodea, y lo contrasta con los laboratorios chicos y abiertos. Concluye que en estos laboratorios la fragua y el estudio volvieron a la misma sala.

Il saggio si chiede perché le aziende di intelligenza artificiale si chiamino laboratori. Segue la parola dal laboratorium alchemico e dalla domus chymica di Libavius, con l'athanor, l'alambicco e il bagnomaria, fino a Newton ultimo dei maghi, allo studiolo e alla Wunderkammer del Rinascimento, alla Royal Society di Boyle e Hooke, a Menlo Park, ai Bell Labs, a Los Alamos e allo Xerox PARC. Descrive il lavoro di un laboratorio di IA in quattro tipi, pre-addestramento, post-addestramento, valutazione e interpretabilità, insieme al lavoro umano che lo circonda, e lo confronta con i laboratori piccoli e aperti. Conclude che in questi laboratori la fucina e lo studio sono tornati nella stessa stanza.
