Description

Deep-research article on hydration in sickle cell disease as supportive care, built around what the human evidence actually shows. CDC: approximately 100,000 Americans live with SCD; SCD occurs in about 1 in 365 Black or African American births and about 1 in 16,300 Hispanic American births. In 94,616 publicly insured people with SCD (2008-2016 claims), average life expectancy was 52.6 years. The CDC lists maintaining adequate fluid intake among lifestyle strategies, and hospital crisis care includes oral or intravenous fluids with overload caution; a guideline review found no randomized trials showing intravenous fluids improve or resolve crisis pain. In the SCOT trial (67 children, 8 weeks), a DHA omega-3 formulation raised membrane DHA/EPA 109-171% and improved some biomarkers, while its clinical crisis-rate result was not significant (rate ratio 0.47, 95% CI 0.20-1.11, P=0.07). In a 31-child crossover trial, folic acid 1 mg/day left clinical benefit uncertain. No supplement is recommended; sickle cell care is physician-directed. Evidence grade: EMERGING for hydration as support. Educational article from the Buddha Ayurvedic School of Medicine: https://buddha.hospital
