The coffee-break tax: what your next Claude Code message costs after a 0 to 65 minute pause

Claude Code 2.1.295 (Opus 5.5) builds a browser game, waits 0, 4, 6, 15, 30, 55 or 65 minutes, then gets a small change request in the same session (--resume); two runs per pause, measured 2026-10-20. Per run: cache reads and writes of the first model call of the next message, total cache traffic, model calls and the API list-price cost of that message. After pauses of 0-55 minutes the next message cost about $0.04 (cache hit); after 65 minutes the one-hour cache had expired, about 27,000 tokens were written again and it cost about $0.25 (about 6x).
