GetGenome AI in Genomics Workshop, Tunisia 2026

Description

AI-driven tools like AlphaFold are transforming structural biology, but the skills to use them remain concentrated in a handful of well-resourced labs. In September 2026, GetGenome and The Sainsbury Laboratory delivered “AI in Genomics: Real-World Applications & Opportunities”, a hands-on workshop in Tunis and Sfax, Tunisia, run with the Centre of Biotechnology of Borj Cédria and the Higher Institute of Biotechnology of Sfax. The 61 attendees, from undergraduates to associate professors, moved through structural modelling predictions, to designing new-to-nature binders. The workshop was supported by a local facilitator team, trained through a new Facilitator Programme designed to support the next generation of trainers and extend impact beyond the workshop. Pre- and post-workshop surveys were distributed to participants to assess their capability, confidence and attitudes toward AI and the use of AI-enabled tools such as AlphaFold. The pre-workshop survey found awareness of AI but few skills and little confidence to use it. Post-workshop results found self-rated capability and confidence improved, and every respondent said they would recommend the workshop to a colleague. The findings highlight a clear gap between participants’ recognition of AI’s importance in life science research and their confidence and practical skills in using AI-enabled tools. These results provide a baseline for evaluating how hands-on training can support the development of AI research capabilities in underserved regions.
