Geomagnetic Secular Variation
Description
Cover Letter
Dear Editor, Readers,
Please consider the enclosed manuscript, "Geomagnetic Secular Variation and Regional Hydroclimate: A Mississippi-Louisiana Inquiry," for publication.
This manuscript is intentionally presented as an inquiry paper and response paper focused on a specific scientific question raised through correspondence with Dr. Ciarán Beggan regarding geomagnetic secular variation, the migration of the agonic line, and the current absence of a broadly accepted geomagnetic-climate mechanism. The purpose of the paper is not to claim resolution of that question, but rather to document the inquiry, establish the geographic framework, and identify empirical pathways for investigation. 1
The manuscript advances two central observations. First, geomagnetic secular variation is geographically structured and measurable through established geomagnetic models. Second, regional hydroclimatic variability is also geographically structured. The paper argues that comparison between these independently observed spatial systems is scientifically reasonable and warrants investigation. 1
Importantly, this work should not be interpreted as the complete presentation of the broader Freeman-Saulsberre research program. The present paper is intentionally limited in scope and serves primarily as a foundational inquiry establishing the question and motivating framework. 1
A second manuscript is currently being developed under the working title "Expanded Mechanism and Geographic Testing of Geomagnetic Secular Variation and Regional Hydroclimate: The Freeman-Saulsberre-Beggan-Renwick Mapping Model." That forthcoming work is intended to expand the proposed physical mechanism, extend testing beyond Mississippi and Louisiana to additional geographic regions, and examine whether the proposed relationships persist across independent historical periods and out-of-sample analyses.
Accordingly, the present manuscript should be evaluated as a standalone inquiry and response paper whose primary contribution is the articulation of the research question, the geographic framing of the problem, and the establishment of a testable framework for future investigation.
Thank you for your consideration.
