An Educational Framework for Studying Helminth Diversity in Passerine Birds of the Fergana Valley

  • 1. Fergana State University

Description

This article proposes a teaching framework that uses avian helminth ecology to develop ecological reasoning and quantitative data interpretation in undergraduate biology and teacher education. The Fergana Valley provides the regional context, with Fergana, Yazyavan, and Beshariq districts identified as possible settings for future comparative investigations. The framework was developed through a focused narrative synthesis of published studies on bird helminths in Uzbekistan, standard parasite ecology terminology, and literature on scientific inquiry and data interpretation. Its main components are a traceable data record, clearly defined infection indicators, a sequence of learning activities, and criteria for assessing student explanations. Learners distinguish host and parasite taxa, calculate prevalence, mean intensity, and mean abundance when the required counts are available, and evaluate whether habitat comparisons are supported by the sampling design. A numerical inconsistency in a published regional study is used to illustrate source verification. The proposed activities use published records and teaching materials without requiring new animal collection. The article presents a methodological proposal rather than new faunal observations or measured learning outcomes. Classroom evaluation is needed to establish its feasibility and educational effectiveness.
