Pre-Prophetic Cinema: A Jewish Doctrine of Prophetic and Avant-Garde Creation (English Edition)
Authors/Creators
Description
Pre-Prophetic Cinema is the founding book of the Pre-Prophetic Cinema movement, an Israeli cultural movement founded in 2015 that calls for the renewal of Hebrew creation from its prophetic roots. Drawing on the thought of Rav Abraham Isaac Kook, Rav Yehuda Léon Ashkenazi (Manitou) and Rav Oury Cherki, the book proposes a Jewish doctrine of creation in which art does not only depict the world but helps bring a new reality into being — preparing the vessels, in imagination and in culture, for a renewed prophetic consciousness.
The book contains a foreword; the movement's vision and manifesto; the doctrine of pre-prophetic creation; a study of the creating soul; a study of Hebrew prophetic culture from antiquity to its modern revival; twenty-three essays on cinema, editing, directing, aesthetics and Jewish thought; the School of Prophets, an imaginative curriculum; and the movement's Complete Glossary of 113 entries.
This English edition is translated from the Hebrew edition (קולנוע קדם נבואי: תורת יצירה יהודית נבואית ואוונגרדית, e-vrit, 2026). It omits the Hebrew edition's gate of stories and prose pieces and replaces its short glossary with the Complete Glossary. Quotations from Rav Kook are newly translated and located in Shemonah Kevatzim by notebook and paragraph.
