Project 51: Reading the Record Across Rules

Description

Take an ordinary pack of cards, set the two of clubs aside, and put the other 51 in some order. That order is a record: it can carry a number, and anyone who knows the convention can read the number back. Project 51 asks what happens when a reader is given less than the full order. A rule lets the reader see a card’s value but not its rank, or a weight class but not a face, or the present state of a game but not its past. For each such view we ask what it retains, what it loses, and exactly what must be added to recover the rest. The answers are finite and exact. The 51-symbol alphabet is derived from a declared encoding, and its 51 weights fall into seven classes. Two natural views together leave eight possible arrangements, and one further bit per card removes them. A missing distinction can be priced: in one poker hand it is worth 319/92 points. A deterministic card game can have four different pasts for one present. The same discipline is then turned on a harder subject, the zeros of the Riemann zeta function, where it marks what card arithmetic can say and what it cannot. Nothing in this volume proves or bears on the Riemann hypothesis, which remains open.
