Description

This essay is situated within the conceptual line initiated in Elocuencia: la emoción de Coherencia Universal.
It examines two ways of interpreting conversational artificial intelligence systems: attributing consciousness to them on the basis of their behavior, and considering that their computational nature is sufficient to explain everything they do. Subjective experience is not deduced from a convincing conversation, but identifying the generation procedure does not amount to reconstructing the mechanisms that produce a specific capability either. Drawing on research into representation learning and interpretability, the text distinguishes between designing a system, anticipating its behaviors, and explaining how it performs them. It also separates the emergence of capabilities that were not explicitly programmed from the attribution of consciousness, and the difficulty of explanation from an effective loss of control. It studies that distance without turning it into evidence of a hidden mind, nor dismissing it by means of the phrase “they’re just algorithms.”
