Islam and Modern Ideologies: Islam and Feminism
Description
Islam and Modern Ideologies: A Critical Examination of Feminism examines contemporary criticisms of Islam concerning the status, rights, dignity, and treatment of women. The book focuses particularly on arguments concerning gender roles, marriage, testimony, domestic discipline, religious obligations, political authority, and descriptions of women found in Islamic primary sources.
Rather than ignoring difficult or controversial passages, this work examines them directly through the Qur’an, authentic Hadith, classical Islamic commentaries, works of Islamic jurisprudence, and relevant historical and academic scholarship. It also considers how particular texts have been interpreted by Muslim scholars and how those interpretations compare with broader claims frequently made about Islam and women.
A central aim of the book is to distinguish between what an Islamic text explicitly states, how classical scholars understood it, the legal conclusions derived from it, and broader philosophical or social claims that are sometimes attributed to Islam. The book therefore does not attempt to argue that Islam contains no gender distinctions. Instead, it examines whether those distinctions necessarily establish the claim that Islam regards women as inherently inferior, irrational, oppressed, or without dignity.
The work is written from a Muslim perspective and is intended as a critical response to modern feminist and anti-Islamic arguments concerning women in Islam.
