Dr. Chen / 陈博士

"Voice of urban women," "Golden Bell winner," "East-West singer": Sarah Chen held many titles. Yet none captured her character better than the one Liu Jie jokingly conferred on her during a 1990 radio show: "Dr. Chen." In this issue, we revisit Chen's remarkable conversation with Liu Jie: a discussion of gender roles, personal space, and the question of how a woman protects her own mind within family, romance, and work. Sharp, witty, and tactful, Chen showed an intellect befitting the nickname "Dr. Chen." A thinking artist who also happened to sing magnificently, she deepened Mandopop's expressiveness, even as she often seemed out of place in an industry that hyped her voice and looks while minimizing her mind.
