Climate and Environmental Analysis in the EARTHONE Project Progress in Multi-Scale Modelling and Phenological Assessment

Description

How can we adapt to climate change with smarter land use... without triggering unwanted side effects locally? That's the question at the heart of EARTHONE's climate and environmental analysis work, presented this week at iCACGP-IGAC 2026 in Heraklion. Using a cascading modelling framework from the global-scale ICON earth-system model, through regional downscaling with WRF, down to ecosystem-level phenology tracking, the team is mapping how interventions like afforestation, agroforestry, and wetland restoration could reshape Europe's climate, extremes, and vegetation cycles through 2050. Early results already show promising agreement in the historical period, alongside coherent spring phenology patterns across the continent, laying the groundwork for science-based recommendations on sustainable land management
