Beyond the DSM-5-TR Communication and Language Profile
Description
This article reinterprets the DSM-5-TR communication and language profile through the SMART-NB methodology, distinguishing speech, language, and communication as related but functionally different dimensions. It proposes a multidimensional assessment of receptive and expressive language, communicative intent, pragmatics, nonverbal communication, motor speech, intelligibility, prosody, augmentative and alternative communication, and contextual performance, while considering clinical and environmental factors that may modify the child’s presentation.
