Description

This paper introduces the System Drift Observatory (SDO) and its formal measurement construct,
the Drift Tensor. The Drift Tensor represents system drift as a time-dependent multidimensional
state:
Each dimension represents a distinct class of deviation from an established constitutional or
operational baseline. The Observatory measures not only drift magnitude, but also its velocity,
acceleration, persistence, propagation, and proximity to defined thresholds.
The framework distinguishes change from drift, drift from violation, and drift from failure. A
system may legitimately adapt while preserving its governing identity and constitutional conditions.
Accordingly, the Observatory does not itself determine legitimacy; it provides the measurement
layer through which governance can evaluate whether observed change remains admissible.
The central proposition is that drift should be detected before constitutional thresholds are
crossed. Early detection enables observation of emerging deviation, identification of propagation
between system dimensions, and revalidation before identity, coherence, governance, or continuity
are materially compromised.
The System Drift Observatory therefore establishes a foundation for treating drift not as a single
failure condition, but as a measurable trajectory through the constitutional state-space of a
persistent intelligent system.
