Description

🇬🇧 The Legend of the Taptana: The Cañari Counter
The Legend of the Taptana: The Cañari Counter is a work of literary fiction inspired by Cañari culture, the Andean worldview, ancestral memory, and the cultural heritage of Ecuador. Set against the Andean landscapes of southern Ecuador, the story explores the relationship between nature, memory, seeds, water, stones, paths, numbers, and ancestral knowledge, presenting the Taptana as a literary symbol of early ways of observing, ordering, and understanding relationships in the world.
The story follows Sisa, a young girl whose curiosity leads her to wonder where numbers lived before people gave them names. As she learns from her grandmother and observes the mountains, water, seeds, stars, and paths, she begins to discover that counting is not simply about knowing how many things exist, but also about recognizing relationships, changes, absences, cycles, and forms of order.
Her journey eventually leads her to an ancient stone marked with small cavities and paths that appear to preserve knowledge that has endured for a very long time. Through this encounter, the narrative develops a literary interpretation of the Cañari Taptana as a symbolic expression of a way of observing, counting, ordering, remembering, and understanding the world.
The work interweaves Andean legend, ancestral memory, Cañari culture, nature, mathematical thinking, cultural heritage, and intergenerational knowledge transmission. Mountains, water, seeds, stones, lakes, and the sky acquire symbolic significance within a story in which learning means observing carefully, recognizing relationships, and discovering that knowledge can also remain within things, paths, and the memory of those who have observed them.
Sisa's journey also leads toward Ingapirca, one of the most significant cultural spaces within the narrative world of the book. Along this journey, the Taptana becomes more than a stone associated with counting: it becomes a symbol of cultural memory, the search for knowledge, identity, and the transmission of knowledge across generations.
Freely inspired by elements of Cañari cultural memory, the Andean worldview, and traditions of knowledge transmission, THE LEGEND OF THE TAPTANA belongs to the realm of literary fiction. Its characters, events, and narrative elements do not constitute a historical reconstruction and are not intended to provide a documentary account of the origin of the Taptana or of any specific archaeological specimen.
The work may be of interest to readers and projects concerned with Ecuadorian and Latin American literature, Cañari culture, Andean peoples, cultural heritage, ancestral memory, Indigenous knowledge, intercultural education, mathematical thinking, learning, and intergenerational knowledge transmission.
