Practical In Satellite Imageries

Description

Satellite imagery has become an essential component of modern geographical studies, providing valuable information for understanding, monitoring, and analyzing the Earth's surface. The increasing availability of multispectral satellite data and open-source geospatial software has created new opportunities for students and researchers to develop practical skills in remote sensing, image processing, and land-use and land-cover analysis. In this context, Practical in Satellite Imageries has been prepared as an application-oriented academic resource for students of Geography and related disciplines.

This multi-author book is designed to provide a systematic understanding of the practical procedures involved in acquiring, preparing, processing, enhancing, and classifying satellite imagery. The contents are organized to support students in developing hands-on skills while connecting fundamental concepts with practical geographical applications.

The book begins with the preparation and acquisition of satellite images. It introduces students to browsing and accessing satellite data through relevant sources and portals, including NRSC, Bhuvan, and USGS Earth Explorer. The book also provides an overview of important satellite datasets such as Landsat, LISS-III, AWiFS, and Sentinel-2 multispectral data, together with their associated metadata. These topics help learners understand the selection and preparation of appropriate satellite imagery for geographical analysis.

A significant emphasis is placed on QGIS, an open-source geographic information system widely used for spatial data processing and analysis. The book introduces the concept of open-source software, provides an overview of QGIS, discusses its differences from proprietary GIS software such as ArcGIS, and guides learners through the basic installation and use of the software.

The practical aspects of image processing and enhancement are also addressed, including image statistics, band-selection criteria, generation of multispectral images, and image fusion. These techniques enable students to improve their understanding of satellite image characteristics and prepare imagery for subsequent interpretation and analysis.

Another important focus of the book is image classification for Land Use and Land Cover (LULC). Through practical exercises and systematic procedures, students can develop the skills required to process satellite imagery and perform classification tasks relevant to geographical studies and environmental applications.

The multi-author nature of this book brings together the academic experience and geographical expertise of the contributors. The authors have attempted to present the practical content in a clear, structured, and student-friendly manner so that learners can progressively develop the technical skills required for working with satellite imagery and geospatial technologies.

The book is primarily intended for undergraduate and postgraduate students of Geography, Remote Sensing, Geographical Information Systems, Environmental Studies, and related disciplines. It may also serve as a useful practical reference for teachers, researchers, and professionals who are beginning their work with satellite imagery and open-source GIS tools.

We sincerely hope that Practical in Satellite Imageries will help students transform theoretical knowledge into practical skills and encourage them to explore the growing applications of satellite remote sensing and geospatial technologies in geographical research and real-world problem solving.

The authors gratefully acknowledge the support and encouragement received from their institutions, colleagues, students, reviewers, and all those who contributed directly or indirectly to the preparation of this book. Constructive suggestions and feedback from readers will be highly appreciated for improving future editions.
