The central facilities view on open data in mainland Europe
Description
The trend towards open FAIR data has been steadily increasing over the years with the support of funders including governments and the European Commission. A number of these activities at central facilities are supported by the European Commission under the banner of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). At the same time there is a growing awareness amongst facilities and researchers of the need for Open Data both for reproducible publications and as training data for AI/ML algorithms. This is facilitated by the relative ease with which data repositories can be created and populated raising questions of standardisation and their level of FAIRness and sustainability. At the same time central facilities and their users are facing the challenge of dealing with the ever increasing volumes of data being produced. This talk will give an update on the view from the central facilities on open and FAIR data in mainland Europe and the challenges. The talk will give examples of where Open Data are having an impact and how this could be increased.
