Description

COST Action CA21161 A New Ecosystem of Early Music Studies (EarlyMuse) has allowed us to explore
the current state of historical musicology, possible futures, and ways to get there. The roads have
to be built through collective work from people in different positions who all want to see music ecosystems
thrive: from policy makers on regional, national, and European levels tostatistical bodies,
research institutions, funders, heritage organisations, and publishers. Building on insights from the
six reports in this volume, we identified four action-oriented verbs and suggest twelve recommendations
to which all actors can contribute. Readers are invited to identify the ones they are in a position
to act on, rather than to treat the set as a petition addressed elsewhere. Description and recommendation
belong here to the same chain of argument. Once the field’s conditions are documented, these
twelve points are what that description implies.
We present them not as an afterthought appended to the reports nor as a manifesto imposed
on them. Rather, we present them as an urgent invitation to which we hope readers respond.
