The Sphere of Changes - A Possible Common Structure in the Odyssey, the Theogony, and the Book of Changes (Short Research Presentation)

Authors/Creators

Description

This short research presentation summarizes the Sphere of Changes, a geometric structure in which the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching (Yijing, Book of Changes) are generated from the Creative and the Receptive by seven simple mathematical rules and arranged on a sphere with poles, polar circles, tropics, an equator of 18 hexagrams, an inner Channel and a center, in a 22-20-22 distribution.

It then outlines a possible correspondence with Hesiod's Theogony, from Gaia and Uranus at the poles through the Titans and Olympians to the daughters of Zeus on the equator, and with the principal figures of Homer's Odyssey: Zeus and Athena, Poseidon and Helios, Apollo and Artemis, Odysseus, Telemachus and Penelope.

It also considers the numbers 18, 50 and 108 in Greek and Chinese traditions, including Pangu, Achilles and the yarrow stalks.

The work is presented as a hypothesis rather than an established historical conclusion; a longer extended presentation is available separately.
