The Sphere of Changes - A Possible Common Structure in the Odyssey, the Theogony, and the Book of Changes (Extended Research Presentation)
Authors/Creators
Description
This extended research presentation introduces the Sphere of Changes, a geometric structure in which the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching (Yijing, Book of Changes) are arranged on a sphere by seven simple mathematical rules: the Creative and the Receptive at the poles, polar circles of 6 hexagrams, tropics of 12, an equator of 18, an inner Channel between the poles and hexagrams 63 and 64 at the center.
It then explores the hypothesis that the same structure can be recognized in Hesiod's Theogony, with Gaia and Uranus at the poles, the twelve Titans on the polar circles, the twelve Olympians on the tropics and the eighteen daughters of Zeus on the equator, and in Homer's Odyssey.
It discusses the recurring numbers 18, 50 and 108 in Greek and Chinese myth (Pangu, Achilles, Penelope's web, the 108 suitors) and formal analogies with the Wheel of Samsara (Bhavacakra), the line of the months and the four alchemical elements.
The correspondences are offered as an exploratory hypothesis, not as proof of historical contact between Greece and China.
