Abstract (English)

The foundational book of the Pre-Prophetic Cinema movement (קולנוע קדם נבואי).

The book begins from the question of what Jewish art actually is, and rejects the conventional answers: Jewish art is not religious art, nor sectoral, nationalist or merely "spiritual" art. Its proposed answer is that any creation calling itself Jewish must stem from the deepest root of Judaism — prophecy. Prophecy is understood here not as predicting the future but as creating it. On this reading, the original Israeli talent is the prophetic talent, and the original Israeli culture is a prophetic culture.

From this premise the book develops a full doctrine of creation: a prophetic grammar subject to no fixed forms, categories, ideologies or dogmas, and a point of absolute freedom from which the work arises. The argument draws on the thought of Rav Abraham Isaac Kook, Rav Yehuda Léon Ashkenazi (Manitou) and Rav Uri Sherki, and on Jewish mystical tradition, translating them into the working tools of contemporary cinema and art.

The volume brings together the movement's manifesto and founding principles, its doctrine of creation, essays, stories and visions, the "School of Prophets", and a glossary of concepts for modern Hebrew prophetic art.

The Pre-Prophetic Cinema movement was founded in 2015 by Sasha Netzach Agarunov, an Israeli actor, filmmaker and thinker, and an Ophir Award laureate. Its first public gathering was held in Jerusalem in 2018, with Rav Uri Sherki and an audience of filmmakers.
