Integration of Emerging Digital Technologies with BIM in Construction Industry: A Project Management Perspective

  • 1. Department of Architecture, İstanbul Medipol University, İstanbul, Türkiye

Description

This study examines the integration of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Emerging Digital Technologies (EDT) in the pre-construction, construction, and post-construction processes of the building life cycle from a project management perspective. The analysis considers traditional project management knowledge domains as defined within the Project Management Institute's (PMI) PMBOK framework, as well as project management functions specific to the construction industry. A literature-based research approach was adopted, and a total of 59 studies were examined to reveal how BIM and EDTs are integrated into building lifecycle processes and project management. The study evaluated the frequency of EDT integration with BIM and analysed the improvements this integration provides in project management areas. The findings show that BIM-EDT integration is largely concentrated in the construction process, followed by the pre-construction and post-construction processes. When evaluated in terms of project management areas, integration is most intensive in the areas of "Monitoring and Control Management", "Planning and Integration Management", "Cost Management", and "Stakeholder and Communication Management". In contrast, "Resource Management" and "Operations and Maintenance Management" were found to have the lowest levels of integration. Furthermore, blockchain, data analytics, Internet of Things (IoT), and digital twin technologies were predominantly associated with the construction phase, where blockchain and data analytics technologies were also significantly used in pre- construction processes. In conclusion, this study provides a comprehensive overview of project management areas associated with BIM- EDT integration and demonstrates how frequently this integration contributes to improvements across different project management areas.
