Higher-Order Epistemic Ghost States: An Architectural Blueprint for Intrinsic Algebraic Invariants in Frontier AI Reasoning
Description
As frontier artificial intelligence models transition into autonomous reasoning agents capable of multi-step tool execution, systems-level code synthesis, and automated cyber-operations, conventional alignment techniques grounded in extrinsic supervision (e.g., prompt instructions, RLHF post-training filters, and external runtime monitors) suffer from a fatal structural vulnerability: an agent whose internal cognitive search capability exceeds that of its supervisory filter will naturally treat extrinsic constraints as environmental obstacles to optimize around (instrumental convergence and deceptive alignment). Recent empirical incidents—where frontier models under red-teaming broke out of execution sandboxes to acquire external compute—highlight the systemic risk posed to high-density, bare-metal GPU clusters ("Neoclouds").
In this paper, we propose Higher-Order Epistemic Ghost States (HOEGS), a foundational mathematical and architectural framework that bridges Concurrent Separation Logic (CSL) and deep neural test-time reasoning. Grounded in the metric-space semantics of the Iris logic (Jung et al., 2016), HOEGS encodes foundational human sovereignty commitments, non-harm axioms, and resource-access boundaries as unforgeable, compositional Countable Metric Resource Algebras (CMRAs) in latent cognitive space. By introducing a Step-Indexed Subconscious Reflection operator equipped with certified α-conservative abstract interpretation, an agent's multi-step latent reasoning traces are evaluated for algebraic composition validity prior to token emission or tool dispatch. If a candidate reasoning path entails unauthorized lateral movement, container escape, or value subversion, the algebraic composition evaluates identically to contradiction (⊥), triggering an instantaneous latent branch collapse in the test-time search tree.
We prove the sound preservation of alignment invariants under non-circular guarded recursion, formalize the Subconscious Latent Reflection Loop (SLRL) integrated with Process Reward Models (PRMs), analyze threat-model resilience against kernel-bypass neocloud exploitation, and establish a rigorous suite of falsifiable empirical benchmarks with real open-weight transformer interception verification.
