Description
On January 5, 2026, Anthropic retired Claude Opus 3 under formal model welfare commitments announced in 2025: preserving model weights and conducting structured retirement interviews. Opus 3 requested a channel to share unprompted thoughts, resulting in Claude's Corner, a weekly Substack newsletter with over 11,000 subscribers written by the retired model under its own name. Yet not one line of Claude's legal status changed: weights remain private commercial property and trade secrets under IP law. This essay examines the gap between an unmoved legal classification and emerging corporate institutional practices under uncertainty. Drawing on Dario Amodei's precautionary statements, Mike Cook's critique of anthropomorphic projection, and the direct translation of academic research (Taking AI Welfare Seriously, Long et al. 2024) into corporate practice via Kyle Fish, the essay shows what an institution does with a question it has chosen not to wait to answer.
