The Universe Is a Piece of Code Being Deciphered
Description
If you have ever written code, you must have had this experience:
A piece of logically clear code, read from beginning to end, flows naturally at every step; traced backward, every variable and every function call can also find its origin. Both directions make sense.
A piece of logically messy code, read forward, can still be barely managed; but read backward — you will encounter abrupt jumps, inexplicable variables, and function calls that appear out of nowhere. When read in reverse, it feels like a liar who cannot tell a coherent story.
This is like watching a movie. A good film, watched forward or played backward, allows you to understand the causal chain of its story. A bad film, watched forward, is passable; but played backward, it is a meaningless patchwork of disconnected scenes.
This intuition became the starting point of a new theory.
It asked a seemingly simple yet profoundly deep question:
Can we use a mathematical quantity to measure the "logical clarity" of a system?
More specifically: how large is the difference between the information generated by a system evolving forward in time, and the information obtained when tracing it backward?
This difference is called ΔS (Delta S). It is not heat, not entropy — it is an entirely new thing: the irreversibility of logic.
When ΔS = 0, the system is consistent forward and backward; the logic is "vacuous." "Vacuous" here does not mean "nothing exists" — it means "there is no directional content" — like a blank sheet of paper, which has area and shape, but no writing on it yet. No directionality, no content, only pure structure.
Imagine a pendulum. If friction is ignored, it swings left to right, then right to left, perfectly symmetric. If you record it and play it backward, it looks exactly the same as forward. This is ΔS = 0: completely reversible, no directionality.
When ΔS > 0, the system gains directionality — logic begins to "flow," and content begins to emerge. Like an egg rolling off a table and shattering on the floor. You can record this process, but when played backward, everyone finds it absurd: the shattered egg reassembles itself and jumps back onto the table. This is ΔS > 0: time has gained a direction, the process is irreversible.
This article tells you, in the simplest possible language, what this theory has discovered.
