The Ladder and the Yardstick What a recognition ledger fixes about the fermion mass spectrum, and what it leaves open

A mass spectrum has two independent parts: the ladder, meaning the ratios and spacings between masses, and the yardstick, meaning the overall scale that turns those ratios into kilograms. This paper shows that a discrete recognition ledger fixes the ladder and does not fix the yardstick, and it makes both halves of that statement precise. Five conditions on the cost of comparing two states, each a reading of "logic applies to comparison," leave exactly one cost function standing, J(x) = (1/2)(x + x^-1) - 1. Carrying that cost to a geometry takes three further premises; we give a counter-model for each, including a four-dimensional kinematics that carries the whole golden-ratio hierarchy and still has no linking, so the reader can see where the construction stops being forced. On the resulting three-cube a particle is a closed light pattern at zero recognition cost. Such a state exists, is unique in its scale orbit, and its mass law is a phi-power ladder in which one rung is exactly one factor of phi, with no continuous parameter anywhere. From this follow the equality of inertial, gravitational and rest mass, obtained because there is one load and two readouts of it rather than two quantities that happen to agree; spin one-half and the Weyl decomposition as properties of the eight-tick carrier; a proof that the up/down orientation is a free convention rather than an underived fact; a generation ladder generated by one cyclic rule whose single anomaly is the Euler characteristic of the boundary sphere; and a neutrino mass-squared ratio of (175 + 73 sqrt(5))/10, fixed by no adjustable quantity, sitting 0.30 standard deviations from the measured value. The yardstick is the other half, and the electron measures it: the bare ladder places the electron 0.19% below its measured mass, which at that measurement's precision is a miss of millions of standard deviations. That gap is not a defect to be apologized for but the sharpest available constraint on the one step this framework has not closed.
