Remote online notarization requirements by U.S. jurisdiction

Statute-cited remote online notarization (RON) requirements for all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia.

For each jurisdiction the dataset records: the date RON provisions took effect and the enacting act; the governing statute and rules; what a notary must do before performing a remote act; the identity-verification standard; where the signer may be located; the statutory notary fee cap; how long the audio-visual recording and journal must be kept; and which document classes the jurisdiction places outside its RON provisions.

Every value carries its own primary-source citation to a state legislature, Secretary of State, or administrative code, and is reported as that source states it. 351 cited values across 45 researched jurisdictions. Jurisdictions not yet researched for a field are recorded as null rather than blank, so an absent value never reads as "none".

Two files, identical in content: CSV (one row per jurisdiction, three columns per field — value, citation, source URL) and JSON (nested, with licence and provenance in the payload).

Published counts of "RON states" differ by definition rather than by fact. This dataset counts 43 jurisdictions where a notary commissioned there can perform a remote act today; the National Association of Secretaries of State counts 47 states plus D.C. having a law permitting remote e-notarization, a broader category that includes provisions not yet in force.
