Enhancements to SAMOS Data Processing to Support Metadata Management

Description

The Shipboard Automated Meteorological and Oceanographic System (SAMOS) initiative is a long-running project that aims to obtain high-quality ship data on a near real-time basis for use in future scientific work, such as creation of air-sea flux products, satellite and model product evaluation, and climate analysis. SAMOS has become versatile over its nearly 20-year run, partnering with over 45 ships from various institutions worldwide. As such, adaptation of the SAMOS processing is critical to accommodate multiple ship data acquisition systems and manage the wide range of vessel and sensor/device metadata that is essential for quality control and science applications. Topics to be presented include (1) SAMOS developments in regards to processing different formats of metadata and new work in partnership with the Rolling Deck to Repository project that will (2) initiate a FAIR data working group focused on underway shipboard data collection and (3) automated event metadata extraction from vessel electronic logs.
