The Patterned Universe: Linking Science, Art, and the Structures of Reality

This study proposes that patterns constitute a generative basis of reality, cognition, and meaning, offering a conceptual framework linking the physical sciences, biological systems, cognitive processes, and artistic practice. Patterns appear widely, from atomic lattices and fluid dynamics to ecological networks, neural activity, and artistic composition, yet they are often treated as descriptive rather than foundational. I argue that patterns function as relational structures that both constrain and enable the emergence of complex systems across multiple scales, each with a characteristic pattern structure. Science and art both investigate these structures: science through analytical and empirical methods, and art through material, perceptual, and experimental exploration. Framing pattern as an ontological and epistemic principle allows a unified perspective connecting these approaches. Rational principles, here termed proto-patterns, can be understood as prerequisites for the formation of matter. In physical systems, patterns organize matter into coherent structures with characteristic configurations. Variability, manifesting as defects, fluctuations, and interactions, generates pattern variants and enables the emergence of increasingly complex forms of matter. In biological systems, signaling gradients, stochastic gene expression, and selective pressures guide the development of tissues and organismal form. Cognition and perception exhibit comparable dynamics: sensory systems function as pattern-detection mechanisms that integrate environmental regularities into predictive structures. Within this framework, consciousness emerges as a dynamic configuration of neural patterns across multiple levels. Art externalizes and experimentally explores these relational dynamics. Historical geometric ornamentation demonstrates how proto-patterns were explored before their formal mathematical description, while contemporary practices, including algorithmic systems and human–robot collaborations, extend these investigations experimentally. By tracing this relational logic across domains, this study suggests that patterns form the scaffolding of existence and that science and art represent complementary approaches to investigating the generative structures underlying reality.
