Biological and Ecological Diversity of Apocrita (Aculeata) Families: An Integrative Review
- 1. Marco Santana Institute
Description
Apocrita (Aculeata) encompasses an exceptional diversity of biological and ecological strategies involving predation, parasitoidism, cleptoparasitism, floral-resource provisioning, and multiple forms of reproductive organization. This integrative review synthesizes current knowledge of the biology and ecology of 30 aculeate families, emphasizing trophic relationships, nesting and developmental sites, provisioning, host and prey use, adult nutrition, social organization, ecological functions, and major knowledge gaps. Five broad biological profiles were identified: 13 families were characterized primarily by predatory provisioning of arthropod prey, six represented pollen- and nectar-provisioning bees, five were predominantly parasitoid, one was primarily cleptoparasitic, and five retained insufficiently resolved reproductive biology for assignment to a well-supported family-level trophic model. Ground nesting was one of the most recurrent reproductive strategies, although cavity nesting, constructed brood cells, host-associated development, and other specialized systems contributed substantial ecological diversification. Solitary reproduction predominated, whereas cooperative and eusocial organization occurred in restricted lineages. Adult and immature stages frequently occupied different trophic niches, particularly in predatory and parasitoid wasps whose larvae depend on animal resources while adults use nectar or other carbohydrate sources. Pollination, predation, parasitoidism, and potential biological control emerged as important ecological interactions, but their ecosystem-level significance cannot be inferred solely from floral visitation, prey capture, or host exploitation. Biological knowledge was markedly uneven among families, with fundamental aspects of host identity, nesting, oviposition, immature development, adult feeding, and population ecology remaining unresolved in several lineages. Overall, Aculeata is best interpreted as a biological mosaic in which similar ecological functions arise through distinct reproductive pathways, while apparently similar strategies may conceal substantial differences in resource use, parental investment, and ecological specialization.
