Beyond Homeostasis and Allostasis: The Ruin Horizon Framework as a Potential Mathematical Organizing Principle of Biological Adaptation

Homeostasis and allostasis provide powerful frameworks for describing biological regulation, yet they leave open a higher-level question: what determines the direction of adaptive change when a system must choose among several states that are viable in the short term? This study presents the Ruin Horizon Framework (RHF) as a systems-dynamical hypothesis addressing this problem. According to the RHF, adaptive systems do not primarily optimize a fixed physiological state or nominal performance; rather, their dynamics are organized so as to maximize their distance from a dynamic Ruin Horizon. The Ruin Horizon is a state-dependent boundary beyond which the relevant organization of the system, or recoverable functional operation, can no longer be maintained. We refer to the corresponding adaptive operating range as the Coping Equilibrium.
The Ruin Horizon and Coping Equilibrium did not arise as retrospective conceptual reinterpretations of allostasis, but from an independently developed, formally defined deterministic mathematical system. The equations, state-space construction, dynamic-horizon calculation, and computational implementation constitute protected intellectual property and trade secrets and are therefore not disclosed in this paper. Across the biologically distinct cases examined to date—including cancer systems, viral dynamics, and dynamical patterns associated with Alzheimer’s disease—the same underlying mathematical structure has provided a consistent systems-dynamical interpretation. The same architecture has also performed effectively in control-engineering simulations and proof-of-concept studies aimed at preventing critical states and system collapse. These findings motivate, but do not prove, the hypothesis that biologically distant adaptive phenomena may represent different realizations of a common higher-level dynamical principle. If supported by independent studies, biological stability could be interpreted not as the ultimate objective of adaptation, but as an emergent consequence of maintaining sufficient distance from the Ruin Horizon.
