Fatal flaws in the Einstein–Standard Model action
Authors/Creators
Description
Popularized science literature, institutional media, and pedagogical summaries frequently present a single composite generating functional—unifying the Einstein-Hilbert action with the Standard Model Lagrangian—as the definitive “Theory of Everything (so far)”. This paper presents a systematic mathematical and physical audit of that assertion. We do not dispute the empirical validity of General Relativity or the Standard Model within their established low-energy domains. Instead, we dissect the claim that their formal concatenation within a single path-integral expression constitutes a mathematically defined, ultraviolet-complete, and empirically exhaustive fundamental theory. We establish an explicit five-tier epistemic hierarchy and evaluate the master expression against six solid criteria:
-
(i) Formal Measure Obstructions: The non-existence of infinite-dimensional translation invariant Lebesgue measures and the unsupplied gauge-quotient, gauge-fixing, and regularization procedures on the configuration space;
-
(ii) Operator-Algebraic Structure: Structural constraints from Haag’s theorem regarding the interaction picture and the hyperfinite Type III1 von Neumann factor classification of local observable algebras;
-
(iii) Ultraviolet Non-Renormalizability: The explicit on-shell two-loop gravitational divergence (the Goroff-Sagnotti counterterm) and the breakdown of the perturbative Einstein expansion at the Planck scale;
-
(iv) Internal Field-Theoretic Tensions: Wilsonian threshold sensitivity in the scalar sector, the one-loop hypercharge Landau pole and absence of evidence for an interacting ultraviolet fixed point in the displayed Standard Model sector, and near-critical electroweak vacuum metastability;
-
(v) Empirical Incompleteness: The structural omission of neutrino mass generation, cold dark matter candidates, an explanation of the observed cosmological constant scale, and dynamical baryogenesis mechanisms;
-
(vi) Foundational Status: The mischaracterization of a truncated Wilsonian effective field theory as an ultraviolet-complete fundamental action.
We define explicit criteria required to reverse this verdict, concluding that while the formula serves as a remarkably successful low-energy effective field theory, it does not supply the mathematical, ultraviolet, or phenomenological justification required of a finished Theory of Everything.
