Description

Description

This dataset contains the experimental data used in the article entitled: “Dowel-laminated timber from reclaimed boards: bending properties and stiffness prediction from board-level NDT.”

The research presented in the above article investigated the use of reclaimed spruce timber for the production of slab-type dowel-laminated timber (DLT) for structural floor systems. The reclaimed spruce beams were obtained from the roof structure of the former Servite Monastery in Koper, Slovenia, after an estimated service life of approximately 200 years. The beams were processed and sawn into boards, major biological and physical defects were removed, and the boards were then planed to final dimensions of 40 mm × 100 mm × 1900 mm. Dynamic modulus of elasticity (Edyn) of the boards was determined from the first longitudinal eigenfrequency using impact excitation. Global static modulus of elasticity in bending (Em,g) of the boards was measured non-destructively using four-point bending. Virgin C24 spruce-fir boards were used as a reference for comparison and assessed using the same procedures.

The slab-type DLT specimens were then produced in three groups: RDLT, made of reclaimed timber boards (n = 5); VDLT, made of virgin C24 spruce-fir boards (n = 5); and CDLT, consisting of combined reclaimed and virgin boards (n = 5). Each DLT specimen had five side-by-side boards connected using beech dowels. The 15 slab-type DLT specimens were produced with smooth beech dowels of nominal diameter 12 mm using a specific lamination process based on Em,g of the baords. The DLT dimensions were 100 mm × 200 mm × 1900 mm in all groups and were tested in flatwise four-point bending.

Data organization

The dataset is organized into three folders as follows:

Folder 1: Static and dynamic MOE of boards
This folder contains one file named: Boards modulus of elasticity.csv. This file includes data related to board-level stiffness measurements. For the reclaimed timber, the dataset includes Em,g after full processing (i.e., removing defects and planing) of 41 boards and their Edyn before and after full processing . Corresponding Em,g and Edyn data are provided for the 40 virgin reference boards used in the study as well.

Folder 2: MC, density, and MOE of boards in each DLT specimen
This folder contains one file named: DLT lamination properties.csv. This file includes the board-level density, moisture content, Edyn, and Em,g for the five boards used in each of the 15 DLT specimens.

Folder 3: DLT bending test results
The folder contains 15 individual csv files (RDLT-1.csv to RDLT-5.csv,  VDLT-1.csv to VDLT-5.csv,  and CDLT-1.csv to CDLT-5.csv). Each file contains the raw Load-deflection records obtained during the four-point bending test of the corresponding DLT specimen.
