La Tenue.
Description
Abstract (English)
This essay introduces holding (la tenue): the operation by which a maille — a fragment of world, once opened — remains crossable over time, without being fixed by control or lost to dissolution. Together with the maille and the antiform, it forms the framework of the ontology of passage developed in Le Courage du Réel (Reconnaissance, 2026): the maille says where a world appears, the antiform how it dissolves, holding how it persists. Its two pitfalls are the two deaths of the maille — the crossing that dies when one grips too tightly, the trace that dies when one lets go. To hold is not to keep a form from changing; it is to keep an opening from dying.
One condition governs the operation, and it is its very structure: the one who holds must not disappear into what they hold. Holding demands two things in tension — that a presence keep a maille open, and that the one maintaining it remain a consistent subject. Without the second, what passes for holding is mere self-dissolution, sacrifice, a sinking into a dead maille: a false holding. The central stake of the concept is to tell the two apart, in a culture that readily mistakes care for self-erasure. In the triptych of La Liberté, holding is the third moment of opening: the one that makes habitable what truth has made visible and freedom has crossed.
The final section carries the operation to its edges: love — the holding of the untraversable part of another — and the Outward Gesture (le Geste Dehors) — holding when the place itself is gone, when there is nothing left to inhabit, and one holds all the same. One does not prove a holding; one recognizes it, by whether a presence keeps a world open without losing itself in it.
