Technology Review of Renewable Grid Integration Challenges and Potential Solutions

Description

This independent technical review examines the challenges and potential solutions associated with large-scale renewable energy integration, with emphasis on the Saudi power system. It reviews variability and forecasting uncertainty, frequency and voltage stability, power quality, protection, transmission constraints, cybersecurity, and regulatory challenges. Complementary solutions including battery energy storage, demand response, smart grids, microgrids, FACTS, HVDC, advanced forecasting, and grid-forming inverters are assessed. Saudi case studies include the Sakaka and Sudair solar projects, Dumat Al Jandal Wind Farm, NEOM Green Hydrogen development, and the wider national grid transition. The report concludes that reliable renewable integration requires coordinated development of generation, transmission, storage, operational flexibility, validated inverter controls, ancillary services, and cybersecurity.
