Formulation and Physicochemical Evaluation of a Coconut Oil-Based Synergistic Polyherbal Hair Oil

Description

Objective: The present study aims to develop and evaluate a coconut oil-based synergistic polyherbal hair oil using selected medicinal plant materials traditionally indicated for hair care.
Methods & Materials: The formulation was prepared by incorporating powdered plant materials of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, Nigella sativa, Murraya koenigii, Butea monosperma, Glycine max (soya bean), Linum usitatissimum (flax seed), Citrus sinensis (Citrus peel), Eucalyptus globulus (Nilgiri leaves), and Ricinus communis (Castor oil) into coconut oil using a controlled hot maceration technique. The prepared formulation was subjected to physicochemical evaluation, including organoleptic characteristics, pH determination, specific gravity, viscosity, acid value, saponification value, and short-term stability testing.
Results: The prepared polyherbal oil shows satisfactory organoleptic properties with a characteristic odour and uniform appearance. The pH was found within the acceptable range for topical scalp application. Acid and saponification values indicated good quality and stability of the oil base. No significant changes were observed during accelerated stability conditions.
Conclusion: The developed formulation demonstrated acceptable physicochemical parameters and may serve as a promising herbal hair care preparation. Further biological evaluation is recommended to substantiate therapeutic claims.
