From Job Description to Purpose Description: An Organizational Theory of Dynamic Role Design and Future Value Creation in the Age of AI
Authors/Creators
Description
This working paper proposes the Purpose Description (PD), a new organizational design concept for the age of AI. Whereas a traditional Job Description (JD) primarily allocates present tasks, responsibilities, and authority, a Purpose Description defines why an individual or team exists, for whom it creates future value, what questions it continuously asks, and which decision principles guide action.
Connecting work design theory, dynamic capabilities, organizational purpose, and human-AI collaboration, the paper introduces a Two-Tier Dynamic Role Architecture in which the PD provides the purpose and future-value layer while the JD preserves contractual, authority, safety, and accountability boundaries.
The paper further develops the Query Translation Protocol, a framework for dynamically translating corporate purpose and future-value hypotheses into frontline questions and human-AI role allocation. It presents nine testable propositions, measurement approaches, governance mechanisms, safeguards against excessive synchronization costs and organizational politics, and principles for maintaining human accountability and intervention authority in increasingly autonomous AI systems.
The central thesis is: “A job description allocates present tasks. A purpose description distributes the creation of future value.”
This paper forms part of the VURA Working Paper Series and connects Future Value Theory and Enterprise Redefinition to the design of individual and team roles in the age of AI.
