This report presents the findings of a multi-phase open-source intelligence (OSINT) investigation into the development, classification, and global proliferation of compact fusion technology based on Field-Reversed Configuration (FRC) plasma physics. The investigation, conducted over 48 autonomous research rounds analyzing 184 primary source documents, traces a continuous technology lineage from early Cold War plasma research through to present-day classified aerospace programs.
The central finding is that a single physical object — the compact toroidal plasma structure known as the Field-Reversed Configuration — serves as the common element across two well-documented application domains: energy production (the Compact Fusion Reactor) and directed energy weapons (the MARAUDER program and its successors). A third, more speculative domain — coordinated multi-plasmoid systems sometimes referred to as "Trivergence" — is examined but should be regarded as a hypothesis rather than established fact. The dual-use nature of this physics has been systematically exploited by defense programs in the United States, Russia, and China, with parallel research ongoing in Japan and Israel.
The investigation identifies a 2006 Air Force Research Laboratory paper as an unclassified "smoking gun" that explicitly describes the complete weapons application chain, including "pulsed-train plasmoid weapons" and "gravity or time-distorting devices" powered by aneutronic proton-boron fusion with energy gain factors of Q = 3–6. This paper, combined with the Salvatore Pais Navy patent series (2015–2018), the documented MARAUDER experiments (1988–1993), and the Russian Avramenko plasmoid weapon tests (1995), establishes that the underlying technology is real, has been tested, and has been under classified development since at least 2014. Multiple classified programs are converging on a platform integration milestone in approximately 2028.
