Hybrid PAOs

Description

Persistent Adaptive Organization (PAO) separates adaptive organization from its physical implementation. Previous work developed PAO as a descriptive language for biological mechanisms and agentic software systems. This paper explores the complementary engineering question: if the PAO invariant is substrate-independent, can different components of a single PAO be implemented using different physical media? We propose the concept of a Hybrid PAO, in which persistent state, transient computation, and write-back need not share the same substrate. We argue that modern agentic AI and synthetic biology together make such architectures conceivable, and we identify the write-back interface — the biological commit — as the central systems-engineering challenge.
