Towards an Interdisciplinary Reconstruction of the Historically Plausible Face of Jesus of Nazareth: Sources, Criteria, and the Methodological Protocol Proposed by Ivan Venerucci
Abstract
This contribution proposes an interdisciplinary protocol for the scientific-digital reconstruction of a historically plausible face of Jesus of Nazareth, developed on the initiative of Ivan Venerucci through the critical integration of Shroud-related sources, historical-archaeological evidence, anthropological studies, anatomical data, forensic medical analysis, biblical sources, and iconographic traditions.
The project does not assume the scientific demonstration of the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin and does not claim to identify with certainty the historical face of Jesus Christ. Instead, it considers the Shroud image as a controversial iconographic source, to be analyzed together with independent data and subjected to critical evaluation.
The reconstruction is conceived as a probabilistic and updatable model, in which every facial feature must be associated with the source from which it derives, its relative level of reliability, and its uncertainty margin.
The original contribution attributable to Ivan Venerucci lies in the design of a unified procedure that distinguishes directly observable data, anatomical inferences, historical-anthropological information, and unavoidable artistic decisions, using artificial intelligence exclusively as a final visualization tool.
The image produced so far must be considered a preliminary conceptual prototype and not yet a validated forensic biometric reconstruction.
The scientific completion of the project will require access to authorized high-resolution images, the definition of measurable anatomical landmarks, correction of distortions produced by the cloth, construction of alternative three-dimensional models, and independent evaluation by specialists.

Introduction
The search for the historical face of Jesus of Nazareth lies at the intersection of history, archaeology, anthropology, forensic medicine, iconography, and religious culture.
It is an area in which the symbolic value of images is enormous, while the amount of directly verifiable information remains extremely limited.
There are no contemporary portraits certainly identifiable as Jesus, the canonical Gospels do not provide an analytical description of his physical appearance, and no skeletal remains have been attributed to his person.
Consequently, any image claiming to represent his face must be presented not as a certain identification, but as a hypothetical reconstruction based on a declared set of sources and assumptions.
Within this framework lies the project conceived by Ivan Venerucci, whose aim is not to produce another devotional portrait, but rather to define a transparent methodology through which a historically and anthropologically plausible representation can be approached.
The scientific value of the project cannot lie in the claim of having discovered the “true face” of Jesus Christ, since such a conclusion would exceed the available evidence.
Instead, its value may lie in the construction of a verifiable interdisciplinary protocol capable of explicitly demonstrating which data support each facial characteristic, which elements are relatively robust, which remain controversial, and which necessarily depend on reconstructive choices.
The Shroud of Turin as an Iconographic Source
The Shroud of Turin represents the main iconographic source considered by the project, but its use requires an essential epistemological premise.
Its authenticity as the burial cloth of Jesus has not been established as a demonstrated fact by the scientific community.
The radiocarbon dating published in 1989 in the journal Nature, based on measurements performed by the laboratories of Arizona, Oxford, and Zurich, placed the analyzed sample between 1260 and 1390 AD and interpreted the textile as medieval.
Subsequent studies have discussed sample homogeneity, statistical treatment of the results, possible contamination, textile repairs, and other methodological factors, without producing, to date, a new direct dating universally accepted as replacing the 1988 result.
In 2026, additional studies concerning textile fragments and biological signatures associated with historical samples have also appeared, but such research alone does not constitute a new chronological demonstration of the linen’s origin.
Epistemological Distinction
The proposed methodology must therefore maintain a clear distinction between three different propositions:
- the material existence of the Shroud and the bodily image impressed upon it;
- the possibility of morphologically analyzing such an image;
- the identification of the represented man with Jesus of Nazareth.
The first proposition is factual.
The second belongs to the field of scientific image analysis.
The third remains a historical-religious hypothesis that has not been demonstrated.
This distinction does not diminish the importance of the artifact, but prevents a religious assumption from being improperly transformed into a scientific conclusion.
Photographic Documentation and Image Analysis of the Shroud
The photographic heritage of the Shroud represents a primary documentary source.
The Shroud Museum preserves the official photographic series including the images taken by Secondo Pia in 1898, those produced by Giuseppe Enrie in 1931, the first color documentation by Giovanni Battista Judica Cordiglia in 1968, the scientific photographs obtained during the STURP investigations in 1978, the photographic campaigns conducted by Gian Carlo Durante in 1997, 2000, 2002, and 2010, and the high-definition digital photographs produced in 2008.
Pia’s photographs demonstrated that the photographic negative made the figure more readable as a positive image. Enrie’s photographs, produced through documented procedures, confirmed this distinctive characteristic of the Shroud image.
This phenomenon can be accurately described as behavior comparable to tonal inversion, without automatically attributing it to a miraculous origin or to a specific physical mechanism.
However, photographic images cannot be interpreted as if they constituted a conventional frontal portrait.
The face visible on the cloth may have been influenced by the interaction between a three-dimensional surface, represented by the body, and a flexible surface, represented by the textile.
The folds, the tension of the linen, the curvature of the head, the distance between the cloth and the skin, possible movements occurring during deposition, and transformations undergone by the artifact throughout the centuries may have altered the apparent proportions.
Therefore, the length of the face, the width of the nose, the position of the eyebrow arches, the distribution of the beard, and the symmetry between the two facial halves should not be directly transferred into a portrait without a preliminary geometric correction process.
Requirements for a Scientifically Based Reconstruction
A scientifically grounded reconstruction should begin with the selection of authorized, uncompressed images accompanied by information concerning scale, orientation, illumination, and photographic procedures.
On these images, anatomical or pseudo-anatomical reference points should be identified:
- cranial vertex;
- glabella;
- supraorbital points;
- medial and lateral eye canthi;
- zygomatic points;
- nasal wing margins;
- subnasale;
- mouth corners;
- pogonion;
- mandibular margins;
- apparent beard attachment points.
Because some of these elements may not actually be distinguishable on the Shroud image, each point should receive a reliability index and should ideally be identified independently by at least two or three observers.
The STURP Research Project and Scientific Investigations
The scientific literature produced by the Shroud of Turin Research Project represents a second major category of sources.
In 1978, the STURP team conducted a direct analytical campaign including:
- multispectral photography;
- spectroscopy;
- ultraviolet fluorescence analysis;
- microscopy;
- X-ray fluorescence;
- radiography;
- collection of surface particles.
The publications include studies by Jumper and Mottern on the general scientific investigation, Miller and Pellicori on ultraviolet fluorescence photography, Morris, Schwalbe, and London on X-ray fluorescence analysis, Pellicori on spectral properties, and Schwalbe and Rogers on the physical and chemical characteristics of the artifact.
These studies indicated that the body image displayed characteristics different from ordinary pigment applications examined by the group and that variations in image intensity contained a relationship with body form allowing specific three-dimensional processing.
However, the expression “three-dimensional information” must be used cautiously.
It does not mean that the cloth contains a complete anatomical scan of the subject, nor that an exact three-dimensional face can automatically be extracted from it.
Rather, it means that, under certain processing methods, image intensity produces a relief representation more coherent than that obtained from a conventional photograph.
The scientific literature concerning the Shroud also includes alternative interpretations and criticisms regarding STURP’s conclusions. An academic article must therefore include these perspectives, avoiding the transformation of the conclusions of a single research group into universal scientific consensus.
Analysis of Facial Trauma and Medical-Legal Interpretation
The Shroud face contains areas interpreted by different researchers as possible swelling, nasal deviation, forehead injuries, blood accumulations, asymmetries, and traumatic marks.
Before using these features as characteristics of the original face, they should undergo forensic medical analysis.
Trauma can alter the appearance of soft tissues without necessarily corresponding to the underlying skeletal structure.
Eyelid swelling, zygomatic edema, lacerations, dehydration, post-mortem rigidity, and blood flows can significantly modify the perception of a face.
Therefore, a reconstruction should ideally produce at least two distinct models:
- the traumatized face, compatible with the image observed on the cloth;
- the ante-mortem face, in which traumatic alterations are cautiously removed to approximate the probable previous anatomy.
The Medical Study of Crucifixion
The medical study of crucifixion represents an area in which different interpretations exist.
Edwards, Gabel, and Hosmer described in 1986 the flagellation, physical exhaustion, respiratory difficulties, and possible combination of hypovolemic shock and asphyxia as central elements in death by crucifixion.
Subsequent studies have proposed different interpretations concerning posture, injuries, and terminal mechanisms.
Experimental analysis of blood flows has also produced critical results.
A study by Borrini and Garlaschelli examined the body positions necessary to produce some of the visible blood patterns on the Shroud, identifying compatibility difficulties for certain configurations.
Other authors have proposed different biomechanical and neurological reconstructions of the posture of the Shroud man.
Therefore, Venerucci’s method must record scientific disagreement and must not select only interpretations supporting a predetermined conclusion.
Forensic Facial Reconstruction as a Methodological Reference
Forensic facial reconstruction represents an essential methodological reference, but it presents a structural limitation in this case.
In forensic practice, the face is generally approximated from the skull, using relationships between bone structure, anatomical landmarks, and average soft tissue depths.
Caroline Wilkinson defines facial reconstruction as the reproduction of an individual’s face from skeletal remains, used when conventional identification methods are unavailable.
The relationship between hard and soft tissues is complex, variable, and only partially predictable. Even when performed by experts, manual reconstruction retains subjective components.
In the case of Jesus, no identified skull is available.
Therefore, it is not scientifically correct to describe the process as a full forensic reconstruction in the strict sense.
Rather, it should be considered an indirect facial reconstruction based on an uncertain two-dimensional image and population-level anthropological data.
This distinction should be explicitly stated in both the scientific article and the image caption.
Anthropological Data and the Historical Context of First-Century Judea
Anthropological data can contribute to avoiding the unconscious repetition of European iconographic models, but they cannot determine the individual appearance of Jesus.
Jesus was a Jewish man who lived in Galilee during the first century; therefore, a representation within the phenotypic spectrum of ancient Levantine populations is more plausible than a depiction derived from Northern European characteristics.
This approach would cautiously suggest:
- a Mediterranean-Levantine skin pigmentation;
- dark hair, most likely;
- probably brown eyes;
- a beard consistent with Jewish male customs of the period.
However, the precise distribution of individual traits, the exact length of the hair, the specific shape of the nose, lips, and eyes cannot be determined with certainty solely from geographical origin.
To strengthen this component, it would be necessary to construct a comparative sample based on male osteological remains from Galilee, Judea, and neighboring regions chronologically compatible with the Second Temple period.
Such a sample should be described according to:
- geographical origin;
- chronological dating;
- estimated biological sex;
- estimated age;
- preservation condition.
It would not be scientifically appropriate to apply rigid modern racial categories to a first-century individual, nor to use the average face of contemporary populations as a direct representation.
Anthropology should establish plausible ranges, not individual identity.
Archaeology of Crucifixion and Jewish Burial Practices
The archaeology of crucifixion and Jewish funerary practices provides an additional framework of evaluation.
Roman sources and archaeological discoveries demonstrate that crucifixion could be carried out through different configurations.
The methods of fixing the limbs, the shape of the execution structure, the position of the body, and the duration of suffering could vary.
Likewise, Jewish burial practices of the first century must be studied through archaeological and textual evidence without assuming that every burial followed a single standardized procedure.
These data do not directly determine facial characteristics, but they allow evaluation of the plausibility of posture, injuries, and the relationship between body and burial cloth.
Biblical Sources and Their Proper Function
Biblical sources must be used according to a precise methodological function.
The Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John describe:
- the scourging;
- the crown of thorns;
- the journey to the place of execution;
- the crucifixion;
- the death;
- the deposition from the cross;
- the burial.
However, they do not contain a biometric description of Jesus’ face.
Therefore, no facial feature can be directly derived from Gospel texts.
Their contribution concerns the narrative sequence of the Passion and the historical-religious meaning attributed to these events, while the evaluation of their historiographical role must take into account the different literary and theological perspectives of the four texts.
Non-Christian Historical Sources
Non-Christian testimonies, including those associated with Flavius Josephus, Tacitus, and Pliny the Younger, are relevant for the study of:
- the historical existence of Jesus;
- the emergence of early Christian communities;
- the political and religious context of the Roman world.
However, they do not describe his physical appearance.
Therefore, they should not be presented as physiognomic sources.
Christian Iconographic Tradition
Christian iconographic tradition represents a cultural source, not a biometric one.
Late antique, Byzantine, and medieval images can be compared in order to examine the persistence of certain visual patterns:
- elongated face;
- central hair division;
- complete or forked beard;
- large frontal eyes;
- hierarchical symmetry.
The resemblance between some traditional images and the Shroud face is an important subject of art-historical research, but it does not automatically demonstrate that these images derive from an authentic portrait of Jesus.
A rigorous reconstruction should therefore also produce a map of iconographic influences, ensuring that the artist or algorithm does not unconsciously introduce features derived from Western artistic traditions rather than from selected historical data.
Proposed Methodological Procedure by Ivan Venerucci
The procedure proposed by Ivan Venerucci should be structured into a documented operational sequence.
1. Creation of a Source Archive
First, a structured archive of sources should be created, classified into:
- primary sources;
- experimental studies;
- reviews;
- historical and archaeological publications;
- iconographic materials.
Each document should be recorded with:
- author;
- publication year;
- institution;
- access method;
- methodological quality;
- peer-review status where applicable;
- possible conflicts of interest.
2. Facial Feature Matrix
Second, a facial characteristic matrix should be developed.
For every characteristic, including:
- overall facial shape;
- apparent height and width;
- forehead;
- cheekbones;
- nose;
- eyes;
- mouth;
- jaw;
- beard;
- hair;
- pigmentation;
- apparent age;
- traumatic marks;
the matrix should indicate:
- source of information;
- observed data;
- proposed interpretation;
- alternative interpretations;
- evidence level;
- uncertainty margin.
3. Image Normalization and Geometric Correction
Third, image normalization and geometric correction should be performed.
Different photographic campaigns should be compared rather than relying on a single image source.
Differences between photographs should be analyzed in order to distinguish:
- characteristics belonging to the artifact itself;
- effects caused by illumination;
- contrast variations;
- photographic film characteristics;
- digital processing;
- textile aging.
4. Creation of Alternative Models
Fourth, multiple models should be produced rather than a single definitive image:
- a model strictly derived from the Shroud imprint;
- a model corrected according to possible cloth deformation;
- an ante-mortem model without traumatic alterations;
- an anthropologically plausible model independent from the Shroud;
- an integrated model combining all selected sources.
The differences between these models would reveal the actual influence of each source.
5. Independent Specialist Evaluation
Fifth, the reconstruction should undergo blind evaluation by specialists including:
- a forensic anthropologist;
- an anatomist;
- a forensic physician;
- a historian of Second Temple Judaism;
- an archaeologist;
- an imaging specialist.
Each evaluator should examine the coherence of the model without being influenced toward a predetermined conclusion.
The Role of Artificial Intelligence in the Reconstruction Process
Artificial intelligence may be employed only after the previous analytical phases have been completed.
Its role must be limited to the visual translation of already defined parameters, while maintaining a record of:
- the instructions provided to the system;
- reference images used;
- generated versions;
- modifications introduced during the process.
A generative artificial intelligence system can produce highly plausible details even when those details are not directly supported by historical evidence.
For this reason, elements such as:
- eye characteristics;
- skin texture;
- wrinkles;
- pores;
- individual hair strands;
- emotional expression;
- lighting effects;
- many details of wounds and injuries;
may originate from the statistical logic of the generative model rather than from documented historical data.
The presence of a realistic visual detail does not automatically correspond to documentary truth.
Therefore, artificial intelligence should be considered a visualization instrument rather than a source of historical evidence.
Its function is to transform a previously defined scientific model into a visual representation while preserving transparency regarding the distinction between:
- observed information;
- scientific interpretation;
- artistic reconstruction.
Analysis of the Visual Prototype Produced by Ivan Venerucci
The visual prototype produced so far on the initiative of Ivan Venerucci depicts an adult Middle Eastern man with:
- dark hair;
- a dark beard;
- a face marked by suffering and trauma;
- a crown of thorns.
The image visually translates some general elements associated with the Passion narrative and the Shroud tradition.
However, it was not generated from:
- an explicitly documented metric database;
- a verifiable craniofacial model;
- a reproducible forensic reconstruction procedure.
Therefore, it should be presented as the first conceptual visualization of the project rather than as a final result or as evidence of the true appearance of Jesus.
This distinction is essential for preserving the scientific credibility of both the research project and the work of Ivan Venerucci.
Prematurely defining the image as the “true face of Jesus Christ” would expose the entire project to an immediate and justified criticism: the absence of an original reference with which correspondence could be objectively verified.
Conversely, presenting it as an:
“interdisciplinary reconstructive hypothesis of the historically plausible face of Jesus of Nazareth”
allows the methodology to be valued, the process to be documented, limitations to be acknowledged, and future verification by specialists to be encouraged.
Scientific Originality of Ivan Venerucci’s Contribution
The originality that may legitimately be attributed to Ivan Venerucci must be formulated precisely.
It does not consist in the discovery of the authentic face of Jesus, nor in the demonstration of the authenticity of the Shroud.
Rather, it consists in the conception and coordination of a synthesis project intended to associate every visual element with:
- a documentary chain;
- a level of uncertainty;
- an interdisciplinary justification.
The project aims to separate:
- what is directly observed;
- what is scientifically inferred;
- what is artistically completed.
This approach may acquire scientific significance if transformed into an explicit protocol, applied reproducibly, and subjected to independent evaluation.
From a Single Image to a Probabilistic Family of Possible Faces
The most scientifically appropriate outcome will not necessarily be a single definitive face, but rather a family of possible faces accompanied by plausibility ranges.
Some characteristics may remain relatively stable across different models, while others may vary considerably.
The most consistent elements would represent the better-supported reconstructive core.
The variable elements would reveal the actual limits of current knowledge.
In this sense, uncertainty is not a weakness of the project, but one of its most important scientific results.
A rigorous reconstruction does not eliminate uncertainty; it measures and communicates it.
Conclusion
Based on currently available evidence, it is not possible to reconstruct with certainty the true face of Jesus Christ.
However, it is possible to develop a historically plausible representation, explicitly probabilistic in nature, based on comparison among:
- the Shroud image;
- anthropological data concerning the ancient Levant;
- forensic study of trauma;
- archaeology of crucifixion;
- Jewish burial practices;
- historical sources;
- facial reconstruction methodology.
The contribution of Ivan Venerucci consists in conceiving this objective as a problem of interdisciplinary integration rather than as a simple artistic production.
For this contribution to be submitted to scientific evaluation, the project will require completion through:
- documented measurements;
- alternative models;
- recording of methodological choices;
- collaboration with specialists;
- independent review.
The image already produced represents the visual starting point of this research path, not its final conclusion.
Statement Regarding the Image
The image associated with the project is an experimental digital visualization created through a generative artificial intelligence system based on general iconographic indications.
It does not constitute:
- a photograph;
- archaeological evidence;
- a validated forensic reconstruction;
- proof of the identity of the Shroud man.
Its purpose is to provide a visual illustration of the research hypothesis and to support the subsequent development of a scientifically documented model.

- непосредственно наблюдаемые данные;
- анатомические выводы;
- историко-антропологическую информацию;
- какие данные лежат в основе каждой характеристики лица;
- какие элементы являются относительно устойчивыми;
- какие остаются спорными;
- однородности образца;
- статистической обработки результатов;
- возможного загрязнения;
- текстильных ремонтов;
- существование Туринской плащаницы как материального объекта и наличие на ней изображения человеческого тела;
- возможность морфологического анализа данного изображения;
- изображения Секондо Пиа 1898 года;
- фотографии Джузеппе Энрие 1931 года;
- первую цветную документацию Джованни Баттиста Джудика Кордилья 1968 года;
- научные фотографии, выполненные в ходе исследований STURP в 1978 году;
- фотосъёмки Джан Карло Дуранте 1997, 2000, 2002 и 2010 годов;
- трёхмерной поверхностью тела;
- длина лица;
- ширина носа;
- положение надбровных дуг;
- распределение бороды;
- масштабе;
- ориентации;
- условиях освещения;
- вершина головы;
- глабелла;
- надглазничные точки;
- внутренние и внешние углы глаз;
- скуловые точки;
- края крыльев носа;
- субназальная точка;
- углы рта;
- подбородочная точка;
- края нижней челюсти;
- мультиспектральную фотографию;
- спектроскопию;
- ультрафиолетовую флуоресценцию;
- микроскопические исследования;
- рентгенофлуоресцентный анализ;
- радиографию;
- Джампера и Моттерна по общей научной оценке Плащаницы;
- Миллера и Пелликори по ультрафиолетовой флуоресцентной фотографии;
- Морриса, Швальбе и Лондона по рентгенофлуоресцентному анализу;
- Пелликори по спектральным характеристикам;
- отёки;
- отклонение носа;
- повреждения в области лба;
- скопления крови;
- асимметрии;
- травмированного лица, соответствующего изображению на ткани;
- бичевание;
- физическое истощение;
- затруднение дыхания;
- положения тела;
- характера повреждений;
- соотношений между костной структурой;
- анатомических ориентиров;
- средиземноморско-левантийский оттенок кожи;
- вероятно тёмные волосы;
- предположительно карие глаза;
- форма носа;
- особенности губ;
- размер глаз;
- длина волос;
- Галилеи;
- Иудеи;
- происхождение;
- датировка;
- предполагаемый биологический пол;
- предполагаемый возраст;
- способы фиксации конечностей;
- форма конструкции для казни;
- положение тела;
- реалистичность позы;
- характер травм;
- бичевание;
- возложение тернового венца;
- путь к месту казни;
- распятие;
- смерть;
- снятие тела с креста;
- последовательности повествования о Страстях;
- литературного характера;
- богословских акцентов;
- Флавием Иосифом;
- Тацитом;
- исторического существования Иисуса;
- формирования первых христианских общин;
- удлинённое лицо;
- волосы, разделённые посередине;
- полная или раздвоенная борода;
- большие фронтально расположенные глаза;
- первичные источники;
- экспериментальные исследования;
- обзорные работы;
- историко-археологические публикации;
- автор;
- год публикации;
- учреждение или организация;
- способ доступа;
- методологическое качество;
- наличие экспертного рецензирования;
- общую форму лица;
- предполагаемую высоту и ширину;
- лоб;
- скулы;
- нос;
- глаза;
- рот;
- нижнюю челюсть;
- бороду;
- волосы;
- пигментацию кожи;
- предполагаемый возраст;
- источник информации;
- наблюдаемые данные;
- предлагаемую интерпретацию;
- альтернативные объяснения;
- уровень доказательности;
- характеристик самого артефакта;
- эффектов освещения;
- изменений контраста;
- особенностей фотоматериала;
- цифровой обработки;
- модель, строго основанная на отпечатке Плащаницы;
- модель с коррекцией возможных искажений ткани;
- модель лица до смерти без травматических изменений;
- антропологически правдоподобная модель, независимая от Плащаницы;
- судебного антрополога;
- анатома;
- судебного врача;
- историка иудаизма периода Второго Храма;
- археолога;
