Description

This aims to present the preliminary results of the 2025 excavation campaign at Villa A in Dragoncello, carried out as part of a research project investigating a sector of the Ager Ostiensis, specifically the area between the River Tiber and the Via Ostiense. This territory is of considerable historical significance and holds substantial potential for archaeological investigation. The project focuses not only on villas but also on smaller agricultural establishments distributed throughout the landscape. Its primary objective is to reconstruct the settlement patterns and productive organization of these sites in the hinterland of Ostia between the Republican period and the Early Imperial period, also considering their relationship with the River Tiber, which facilitated the transport of foodstuffs—whether locally produced or imported—to the city of Rome. Geophysical surveys are also currently being conducted both in the area surrounding the villa and in other parts of the territory.
